Character, setting, plot, theme and voice are the tools all writers use to create good and enduring fiction. Crime writers, in addition, must ask and answer high-stakes story questions, such as: Why this death? Who else is in danger? What will "justice" mean in this situation? This three-day workshop will discuss and illustrate these points, focusing on examples from a variety of crime novels and stories. Participants will do in-class exercises designed to enable them to employ these tools in individual ways. Time will be allowed for discussion of points of particular concern to participants, ranging from issues of style to questions about the world of publishing.

SJ Rozan, a life-long New Yorker, is the author of thirteen novels and three-dozen short stories. She's an Edgar, Shamus, Anthony, Nero and Macavity winner, as well as a recipient of the Japanese Maltese Falcon award. SJ has been Guest of Honor at a number of fan conventions and in 2003 was an invited speaker at the World Economic Forum in Davos. She's served on the boards of Mystery Writers of America and Sisters in Crime, and as President of Private Eye Writers of America. She leads writing workshops and lectures widely.
