In this course travel writer Thomas Swick will cover the three steps in writing a travel story: research before the trip, legwork while on site, and writing when back home. He will discuss not only what to read but what to watch and listen to. He will give tips on going beyond observation to participation, getting beneath the surface of a place. And he will show how to use personal voice, point of view, narrative flow, imagination, humor and insight to create an evocative travel story.

Tom Swick is the author of two travel books, A Way to See the World and Unquiet Days. His work has appeared in Smithsonian, Afar, National Geographic Traveler as well as The Best American Travel Writing 2001, 2002, 2004 and 2008.
