From elegies to odes, one important aspect of poetry since the Romantics is the poetry of praise and remembrance. In this course, students will explore the extraordinary in the everyday (and vice versa), discover and write of the ecstasy of daily life, and contend with how to describe loss. Participants will also dare to make use of the opposite of praise — writing a poetic curse. Poems will range from the sacred to the sorrowful to the silly, as students receive constructive criticism and praise on their work. Limited to 15 students.

Kevin Young is widely regarded as one of the leading poets of his generation. Young’s poetry and essays have appeared in the New Yorker, New York Times Book Review, and the Paris Review. He is currently a Professor of Poetry at Emory University.
