Through the examination of essays, handouts and daily writing exercises, students will regard the writing of nonfiction as a creative process, rather than a simple assembly
of facts. Participants should finish the class with a
carefully-examined and edited draft. To inform in-class exercises, there will also be daily handouts to read and absorb before the following class. Limited to 15 students.
NOTE: Prior to the first class, students should obtain a copy of The
Next American Essay, edited by John D’Agata, and published by Graywolf Press, and read the essays by Susan Mitchell and Anne Carson.
Facilitator
Nick Flynn’s harrowing, loving memoir, Another Bullshit Night in Suck City, won the PEN/Martha Albrand Award for the Art of the Memoir and has been translated into ten languages. A Guggenheim Foundation fellowship recipient, Flynn teaches creative writing at the University of Houston.
