How does one move from truth to art? In this informal workshop, students will envision and write chapters about their life. Memoir I offers participants the chance to record their life stories and to sculpt their personal narratives with a literary twist. The course offers in-class writing prompts as well as a chance to share longer pieces in a constructive, non-threatening environment. We will briefly explore the expansive world of memoir using excerpts from Esmeralda Santiago, James Baldwin, Alice Sebold, and Rick Bragg.

Jeannie DeQuine's pieces have appeared in Time, Newsweek, and People. She holds an MS from the Columbia Graduate School of Journalism and an MFA from FIU’s Creative Writing Program. She has taught college level writing since 1992, and has helped families write their life stories for more than a decade.
