In a supportive workshop setting, students will learn the elements of fiction such as character, developing a distinct narrative voice, plot, scene, structure, and conflict. Students will experiment with different styles and points of view, and will discuss the use of personal history as a source of inspiration in writing powerful stories which reveal something about our culture and humanity. Students will work towards crafting a short story, while offering and receiving critiques.
Patricia Engel attended New York University and lived in Manhattan and Paris before moving to Miami. She received her MFA in Creative Writing from Florida International University where she also teaches. Her work has appeared in The Boston Review, Big Bridge, and Black Book.
