Selected book for Spring 2009:
Reaching Up for Manhood by Geoffrey Canada

Join millions across America as we participate in the 20th anniversary of this national literacy event. This year, Miami Dade College’s North Campus has selected Reaching Up for Manhood by Geoffrey Canada for the National African-American Read-In. The Florida Center for the Literary Arts will partner with the National African-American Read-In for the third year to present this program at Miami Dade College.
The recipient of the first Heinz Award in 1994 for his work as president and CEO of the Harlem Children’s Zone in New York City, Canada offers a moving and revealing report on the emotional lives of boys. Using vivid stories from his own childhood, this book makes a case for the necessity of building strong supportive bonds to help underprivileged boys reach manhood with confidence and dignity.
Canada is also the acclaimed author of First Stick Knife Gun:
A Personal History of Violence in America.
