The Florida Center for the Literary Arts at Miami Dade College promotes reading and writing throughout the year by consistantly presenting high-quality literary activities open to all in South Florida.

The Center works with established and emerging writers from Florida and beyond. Through Center programs, they help students and diverse members of the community deepen their understanding of literature and sharpen their creative writing abilities.

Fall 2008 Reading Recommendations

The Big Read - Egypt/U.S.
Written in 1961, The Thief and the Dogs is the story of Said Mahran, a thief recently released from jail and intent on having his vengeance on the people who put him there. The book, set in a post-revolutionary Egypt, shows how resentment, reprisal and destitution can shape and shatter human destiny.

One Picture Book, One Community

Max's Words tells the story of a young boy, Max, who is fascinated by his big brothers’ stamp and coin collections.
